The importance of sunscreen use has been clearly established. What is also clear is that sunscreen use alone is not enough to protect against premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. Trying to get most people to stay out of the sun altogether is both unreasonable and impossible. There needs to be a balance between time spent in the sun and measures to minimize damage due to excessive sun exposure. Continue reading »

Except for fine wines and vintage cars, aging is generally an unwelcome process. After the age of 21, we are thrilled when someone says “you don’t look your age”. As you know, nothing reveals (or hides) our age like the condition of our skin.

Maybe because we all lead healthy, active lifestyles, none of us can resist the opportunity to look as young on the outside as we feel on the inside. Continue reading »

snspSunspots: Sensitive skin is more susceptible to sun exposure and the result might often be painful red spots. Try fading these with products that contain bleaching agents, retinol, AHAs and Vitamin C.

Red back-of-arm bumps: This is actually a skin condition called keratosis and must be treated with a prescription salicylic acid cream or gel. Nothing permanent can eradicate keratosis — it’s a genetic characteristic.

Less-than-stellar decolletage: If your shoulders and chest get rough and dry, slough off the top layer of skin with Avita, Retin-A or exfoliating products. Try light peels or lasers for severe wrinkling. Skin is extremely thin in this area, so heavy peels aren’t an option.

Ashy elbows: Exfoliate with a lactic acid scrub or by using a loofah. Continue reading »

Sunscreen is the most important skin care product for the woman who wants to keep great looking skin for life! Selecting the right sunscreen can be a daunting task, given all the various sunscreen type products currently available for purchase. It is important to remember that most women do not get the majority of their sun exposure on the beach, but rather driving the car, getting the mail, taking out the garbage, and walking into the office.

skin-cancer
  • Someone dies from skin cancer everyday.
  • Of all new cancers diagnosed this year, more than half will be a form of skin cancer.
  • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer.
  • There are more cases of skin cancer than all other forms of cancer combined.
  • The rate of increase for melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, has the fastest growing rate of all cancers. In 1980 a person’s risk for developing skin cancer was 1 in 250, currently it is 1 in 87. If the rate continues at this pace it will be 1 in 75 by the year 2000, less than a year away. What will it be when your child is an adult? Continue reading »

Gisele.Bundchen.

Thanks to the popularity of such Coppertoned Brazilian models as the uber-sexy Gisele Bundchen, sun-kissed skin is back in style. Want the look of a golden girl without the risk of sun exposure? Consider self-tanning — a safe and reliable way to go bronze. We asked the experts at the fabulous Bliss Spa in Manhattan for some tips on effectively faking it.

Choose wisely
Most brands of self-tanner come in two shades: light/medium or dark/deep. For the most natural results, select a shade based on your skin tone, not on the color tan you desire. Fair-skinned women should use light/medium; darker-skinned women should use dark. Continue reading »

What are they? Wrinkles are caused by a loss of collagen and elastin — the tissues in the skin that make it firm and elastic — as we age. The degree of wrinkling depends on your genetic makeup, but smoking, dry skin and sun exposure (especially sunburns) make it worse. Dynamic motion — making facial expressions — also causes permanent creases over time.

Treatment

Tretinoin (Retin-A ), other retinoids.

Laser resurfacing. This process burns away the outer layer of skin, bringing a less wrinkled layer to the surface.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). These slough off dead skin cells and stimulate collagen production, making cells look plumper.

Collagen injections.

Chemical peels.

Botox injections.

Fat transfer. Fat is taken out of the buttocks and injected into the creases in the face.

For decades there have been volumes written about the causes of acne . However, thanks to scientific research, facts about blemishes have changed.

Here are some common misconceptions:

Chocolate, pizza, peanuts and fried foods are no-nos for everybody. The new school of thought on food intake is that some people react to foods they eat; others do not. Continue reading »
