A top makeup artist runs makeup workshops for cancer patients

Though saving life is the first priority for women with cancer, saving face with a new beauty routine is increasingly a priority for women whose looks change while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.

Suzette Rodriguez-Waller is one of many makeup artists nationwide who volunteer time in beauty workshops for cancer patients. Together with sponsor Bobbi Brown Professional Cosmetics, she’s created a grassroots program called “The Looking Glass” at Gilda’s Club, a free cancer-support community in Manhattan named for comedian Gilda Radner. skin looks fresher

Without some kind of exfoliant, dead skin cells build up on the skin, making it look dull, or even dry, and clogging pores. Over time, letting dead skin cells buildskin looks fresher up can even contribute to pre-cancerous conditions. Regularly exfoliated skin looks fresher, healthier, and often clearer, with fewer wrinkles.

What to exfoliate with depends on your skin, says Polis. “What type of products you use to exfoliate really depends on the symptoms you’re trying to treat. And the more skin you exfoliate, the better the long term results—but the greater the side effects (redness, peeling and sometimes swelling).”

There are two basic kinds of exfoliants, physical and chemical. “Physical exfoliaters include scrubs, loofahs, and microdermabrasion, all of which use particles to strip away dead skin cells,” says Polis. “Chemical exfoliaters include alpha hydroxy acids, tretinoin, and peels use acid to break down the cement that holds skin cells together, causing exfoliation.”

Physical and chemical exfoliaters both remove the layers of dead skin cells, but the differences are in the side effects—and end results. “Dead skin cells tend to build up in uneven layers; when light hits the skin, it refracts unevenly, making the skin look dull. Physical exfoliators like scrubs are good to use once a week but can irritate skin as they literally rip off the dead skin cells, aggravating acne or irritating sensitive skin,” says Polis. waxing

Unwanted hair. For years, clients have tried to shave it with disposable or electric razors, pluck it with needlepoint or slanted tweezers, or lather it with depilatory creams. They have put up with stubble, nicks, rashes and bumps. So why do they continue to torment themselves which such devices? Waxing or hair removal, as we know it, still is one of the most popular, safe and effective ways to remove unwanted hair. It remains the most underrated treatment in the industry, yet the most lucrative service available. Now is the time to capitalize on waxing services. Continue reading »

Adjusting Your Make-up For Unflattering Clothing Colors ~ Wedding Day Make-up
~ The Question of Balance ~

Good make-up application and choosing appropriate colors for your skin tone are what make your face look great, not how much you spend. Lots of good books have been written on make-up application. I particularly like Bobbi Brown Beauty by Bobbi Brown and Annemarie Iverson, and The Beauty Bible by Paula Begoun. You can find a lot of books on make-up application at the library. Even the books that are 10 or 15 years old can still have much you can learn from. Sometimes you can even find the newest books. The only problem with these types of books is that authors often say “this is the best way” to do something, and then you try it, and it may not work well for you. There are many good opinions and techniques out there, but ultimately very few true “rules.” Sometimes what works well for a professional in her work is too technical, time consuming, or impractical for daily use by the rest of us. Women also have different skill levels, different skin types, different amounts of lines on our faces, live in different climates, and use different types of products. Continue reading »

Accelerating lotions help blushing brides and dashing grooms quickly achieve a healthy glow for the big day.

Accelerating lotions help blushing brides and dashing grooms quickly achieve a healthy glow for the big day.

“Weddings send women into tanning salons,” says Cheryl Stone of California Tan. “When they wear that special dress, they want to look great. They will also, more than likely, be showing more skin.”

Post-ceremony, the couple typically jet off on a honeymoon to somewhere warm, so it’s important to achieve a good base, she adds. While the development of tanning accelerators has facilitated optimal results in a short period of time, there are still considerations.

“Clients should not burn in an attempt to tan quickly,” she says. “There’s nothing worse than a bride with red, peeling skin.”

Shannon Kulikowski of Body Drench echoes these sentiments, adding if you have not planned far enough ahead, a good self-action tanning product is a better alternative for the big day.

“Salon operators should make sure their clients are using products and exposure times appropriate to their skin types,” Kulikowski says. “It’s important to leave enough lead time before the wedding day – and honeymoon – to get a solid base.”

Dr. Michael Caswell, also of Body Drench, is familiar with the many products which enhance tanning results, and points to two key elements.

“For starters, healthy skin tans best,” Caswell explains. “Heat and UV radiation can cause moisture loss, so it is essential to use a product that replaces moisture and maintains the health of the skin. Secondly, a product should include nutrients required for healthy tanning.”
