skin looks fresher

Without some kind of exfoliant, dead skin cells build up on the skin, making it look dull, or even dry, and clogging pores. Over time, letting dead skin cells buildskin looks fresher up can even contribute to pre-cancerous conditions. Regularly exfoliated skin looks fresher, healthier, and often clearer, with fewer wrinkles.

What to exfoliate with depends on your skin, says Polis. “What type of products you use to exfoliate really depends on the symptoms you’re trying to treat. And the more skin you exfoliate, the better the long term results—but the greater the side effects (redness, peeling and sometimes swelling).”

There are two basic kinds of exfoliants, physical and chemical. “Physical exfoliaters include scrubs, loofahs, and microdermabrasion, all of which use particles to strip away dead skin cells,” says Polis. “Chemical exfoliaters include alpha hydroxy acids, tretinoin, and peels use acid to break down the cement that holds skin cells together, causing exfoliation.”

Physical and chemical exfoliaters both remove the layers of dead skin cells, but the differences are in the side effects—and end results. “Dead skin cells tend to build up in uneven layers; when light hits the skin, it refracts unevenly, making the skin look dull. Physical exfoliators like scrubs are good to use once a week but can irritate skin as they literally rip off the dead skin cells, aggravating acne or irritating sensitive skin,” says Polis. snspSunspots: Sensitive skin is more susceptible to sun exposure and the result might often be painful red spots. Try fading these with products that contain bleaching agents, retinol, AHAs and Vitamin C.

Red back-of-arm bumps: This is actually a skin condition called keratosis and must be treated with a prescription salicylic acid cream or gel. Nothing permanent can eradicate keratosis — it’s a genetic characteristic.

Less-than-stellar decolletage: If your shoulders and chest get rough and dry, slough off the top layer of skin with Avita, Retin-A or exfoliating products. Try light peels or lasers for severe wrinkling. Skin is extremely thin in this area, so heavy peels aren’t an option.

Ashy elbows: Exfoliate with a lactic acid scrub or by using a loofah. Continue reading »

Not that I think males shouldn’t be going for beauty treatments–it’s just that I have never thought such pampering was necessary for my less-than-glamorous face.

Occupying several lots on the first floor of Wisma UOA II in Jalan Pinang in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triagle, this studio is the second in the Klang Valley. The first, at Wisma UOA in Damansara Heights, has been around for more than three years, but its men’s facial spa studio was only opened early this year. Continue reading »

waxBrazilian Waxing became the rage when swimsuits and bikinis were designed to show a lot of skin around the pubic areas. Brazilian waxing was first introduced in New York by seven Brazilian sisters. The specialty was that the pubic hair growth was removed entirely or only a neat strip of hair or a small moustache of designed hair growth was left on the pubic area. The average operation costs $50 and the effects can last anywhere from about two to eight weeks.

The sudden surge in the popularity of Brazilian Waxing in the pubic area was that many customers thought it to be a safe option for the pubic area. Those who did not like the itchiness and rashes caused after shaving had turned to waxing as a method of hair removal. Brazilian waxing was preferred to traditional waxing because the wax used for traditional waxing contained chemicals that could irritate the sensitive skin in the pubic area. Brazilian waxing could be done at home but when performed by a professional, the results were better. Many customers were apprehensive about waxing with chemical wax on the sensitive genital area, therefore were very happy to learn about this new type of wax.

The wax used for Brazilian Waxing consists of beeswax and tall oil that is natural and safer for the skin. The one downside of Brazilian waxing is that it is a painful treatment and side effects like ingrown hairs and red bumps could occur. Other hair removal methods have been developed that have somewhat replaced waxing as the best method for hair removal, but for those on a strict budget, waxing is a great way to remove unwanted hair and have it stay gone for a long period of time. Brazilian Waxing is a great way to enjoy smooth, hair free skin that lasts.

Closeup of a happy young beautiful woman with hands on face

To really save some serious money on skin-care, you must check out Paula Begoun’s book The Beauty Bible. She may also save your skin. She explains how sometimes the products we use can be the cause of our skin problems, and how to correct this. This new book was available at my local library. I learned from her how to best care for my skin while using fewer and less expensive products. She also describes and evaluates many skin care and make-up products in her book Don’t Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me. Nobody does skin-care better than Paula, so I am not going to go very much into this area. While I feel make-up product evaluations (except when analyzing ingredients) can be very subjective and a matter of taste, her skin-care product evaluations are based on objective scientific analysis of ingredients. She describes what various ingredients are, their purpose, what they can and can’t do, and which can be skin irritants. See the bookstore to order. Continue reading »
