With the abundance of excuses to step out of your apartment this time of year, despite arctic conditions—clad only in a pair of outrageously sexy Diego Dolcinisdfsf43346 sandals and a skimpy metallic sheath dress—baring a pasty, pallid, not-seen-sun-for-months shoulder or pair of legs could easily threaten the whole ensemble.

“The best way for skin to get color any time of year is with a bottle,” says Janice Cook, the director of spa operations for the Mario Tricoci Hair Salons and Day Spas in Chicago. “Everyone likes to have some color, especially around this time of year—and the self-tanning treatment is one of our most popular services.”

“The color should always be a very natural tone—neither orange, nor too overtly bronze,” says Cook. “And the end result should be as if you’ve lain out in sun for half an hour.”

The most important first step in any self-tanning treatment is exfoliation. “This is the vital part,” says Cook. “People always think that moisturizing is the key to self-tanning, but if you haven’t exfoliated enough, no matter how expensive your moisturizer is, it won’t hydrate your skin properly and you could still end up with a streaky tan. The best tip for any skin care product to work is to exfoliate first; this removes dead surface cells and makes sure the self-tanning product doesn’t look patchy on the skin—the color will be spread evenly, and it won’t be darker in some areas.”
Moisturize the skin well before applying self tanner. Continue reading »

Regardless of how much you spend on beauty products and facials, skimping on sleep will cause your skin to look dull and tired. We takes a look at why this relaxing activity does so much for your skin and health.

We spend so much time popping vitamin pills and making sure we eat the right amount of nutrients so that we stay healthy. Why it is then that some of us are guilty of not doing the most basic thing our body requires? The crime? Not getting the adequate amount of sleep. Continue reading »

  • To rub off dead skin cells, you should use a gritty scrub on freshly cleansed, wet skin. Choose one designed for facial skin; it should feel soft and not too gritty, with minute grains, when you rub it between your fingers. Avoid coarsely ground fruit-pit scrubs; they’re uneven and sharp and can cut your skin. You can’t go wrong with scrubs that contain tiny polyethylene beads, which have no rough edges. Oatmeal scrubs are also gentle. To apply, use your fingertips (not a washcloth) to gently roll the scrub over your skin for 15 to 30 seconds.

  • If your moisturizer stings after your scrub, you’ve overdone it; lay off for at least a week. Continue reading »

  • Here’s how you can check to see if makeup is completely removed after cleansing: Swipe skin with a cotton ball dipped in toner. Look for makeup color residue; a gray smear probably comes from dead skin cells.
  • To see if all excess oil is removed after cleansing, hold a tissue against your cleansed, unmoisturized forehead for 30 seconds. Hold it up to a bright light: If you see dots of translucency, there’s still oil on your skin. Continue reading »

skin care tip

In general, when you buy a super-expensive product, the salesperson tells you it will last forever, because, you see, you’re only going to use a small dab under your eyes in the morning and at night. I’ve always been suspicious of that line — though not enough to avoid making purchases far exceeding my expected spending limit.

Like you, I’m one of those product suckers. Show it to me and I’ll buy it. Tell me it does something miraculous to my skin and I’ll buy two. Continue reading »

Using concealers

Concealers can be used to correct, camouflage and lighten imperfections, blemishes, and under eye circles. Using too light of a concealer will give you raccoon eyes. Applying it to the whole under eye area when you have a puff and a circle will just defeat the purpose. When you begin shopping for a concealer youâll find they come in stick, wand, pot, tube, compact and pencil form. Concealer comes in a variety of skin tone shades and several correction shades such as yellow to correct blue, green to correct redish areas, blemishes and scars and violet for sallow skin tones. Others have light reflecting, or brightening qualities. Continue reading »

Kissed by the sun
Summer is here, and I hope everyone is remembering their sunblock! Bronzer is a great temporary way to fake a tan, but sometimes it can look unnatural and somewhat flat, especially on those of us with lighter skin. I found that adding a touch of pink blush on my cheeks after applying my bronzer makes my tan look more natural, becuase in the real sun, your skin doesn\’t turn just bronze, but a

Make-up-application-tips

First, wash your face. If you have oily skin, use an unscented bar of soap. If you have dry skin, use specially formulated face soap for dry skin, then lather your face with a thick moisturizer to prevent flaking. Next, dry your skin off, and allow it to “settle” for about ten minutes. If you apply the make-up now, it will get pushed out of the pores, creating the “cakey” look.

Now, apply a foundation that matches your skin, using your fingers. Rub the foundation in all over your face as if it was a wonderful cream. Check yourself out in a brightly lit room, make sure there are no streaks. Now, if there are any blemishes on your skin, leave them alone for now.

Next, use a large brush to brush powder evenly over your face. Put some powder on your fingers and rub it into your under-eye area, getting rid of any uneven skin color. Now take a Q-Tip, and put a little bit of foundation on the end of it. If you have any blemishes, lightly (very lightly) dab a tiny amount of foundation onto your blemish. If this conceals it, leave it alone. Otherwise, apply pressure with your finger tip to the foundation in this spot to even it out. Do NOT put powder back on over this spot, it will give it a powdery look. Continue reading »

Today’s natural-based, sunless tanning cremes
give skin a healthy golden glow.

“When shopping for a sunless tanner look for professional products containing natural ingredients, such as soybean oils,” says Eddie Hill, public relations manager for California Sun Laboratories in Chatsworth, California. “Soybean-based products do not streak or smear when applied‹they mix with the body’s natural chemistry to bring melanin to the skin’s surface, producing a tan.”

Before applying your sunless tanner, thoroughly cleanse and exfoliate your skin to eliminate dead skin cells. Apply a thin, even layer of product to the desired areas, and massage thoroughly into the skin.

“The effects of sunless tanners generally last three to four days, so to maintain a golden tan, apply the product daily,” Hill says. “Also be sure to hydrate skin with a professional moisturizer, specially formulated to help lock in color.”

You’ve picked an excellent time to think about changing the contents of your makeup bag. One thing you should probably get rid of is that old mascara. Your eyelashes are your first natural defense against dirt, bacteria and other yucky stuff that can get into your eye area. Replace it every three months, even if it isn’t used up. Everyone thinks that men’s grooming is easy. You know, a little powder, some concealer and if things are
really bad, maybe a hairbrush or a shot of Aqua net. Wrong. What looks easy is often not, and photographers are on the lookout for experienced and trained artists who know the difference between makeup and grooming.
In the last 7 years I have built up a men’s grooming portfolio that represents 40% of my income. Some of the men I have groomed include Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Dick Clark and Ronald Reagan as well as countless models for editorial and advertising clients. As with other gigs, every job is different,
and communication with the photographer or director is key when deciding what grooming needs to be done.
Some men need piles of paint to cover up late nights and too many margaritas, while others are so genetically perfect, I have had to do mock grooming just to look like I am earning my $800 a day. Now a word about male mannequins. Male models are notorious for not taking care of their moneymakers––skin and hair. It never ceases to amaze me when a model who commands $10,000 a day shows up with a sunburned face,
tan lines from sunglasses and hair that hasn’t seen a pair of scissors in months. Never one to mince
words, I often look them straight in the eyes and utter, “How much are you making on this job––and you show up like this.” Continue reading »
