Myth: Never tweeze above the arch.
The Real World: As long as you don’t interfere with the existing shape, and all you’re really doing is cleaning above the area, go for it. Remember, less is more.
Myth: Never use your fingers to apply makeup.
The Real World: Your fingers are warm, acting like mini heat-conductors that help “melt” foundation and spread it smoothly. Your fingers can get into areas, such as the dips in the side of your nose, that sponges don’t reach.
Myth: Frosts and glitters are only for evening.
The Real World: A bit of gleam or touch of shimmer works for day. Pop singer Christina Aguilera loves daytime glitter on her eyes. That’s the key, though: pick a single area – such as eyes or nails – to highlight, rather than both at once.
Myth: Only brunettes should wear black mascara.
The Real World: Black mascara makes the whites of the eyes look whiter, and defines the lash like no other color.
Myth: Light concealer will make under eye circles invisible.
The Real World: Concealer should match your skin tone. It’s best applied with a brush and then patted – never rubbed – into skin. Pat lightly until it completely disappears.
Myth: Cut nails when they are clean and damp.
The Real World: Nails must be dry, or they will tear. This means waiting at least 10 minutes after a shower.
Myth: A magnifying mirror gives you a closer point of view.
The Real World: Only when you’re tweezing or applying false lashes. Otherwise, it’s better to do your makeup in front of a regular mirror. If you focus too much on the details, you can end up overlooking the big picture.
Myth: Use a razor to scrape corns and calluses from feet.
The Real World: Razors make feet harder and more prone to cracking, as any podiatrist will tell you.
Myth: Apply powder when you’re finished with your makeup.
The Real World: Dust on powder before you use blush or mascara. Powder absorbs the oils in foundation that might cause discoloration or streaking. And applying powder before mascara makes your lashes look thicker, and less likely to smudge.
Myth: Matching eye shadow to your eye color brings out your baby blues, greens or browns.
The Real World: This works for beauty pageant contestants. Those of us who don’t wear vinyl mules with our bathing suits need to complement eye color, rather than match it. For example, brown eyes look gorgeous with eggplants and lilacs, green eyes are fantastic paired with fawn, taupes and plum grays. And blue eyes look incredible set off with a bit of peach shadow.

Is your waterproof mascara a standout or a washout? We reduced 5 subjects to tears in order to find out

It’s an all too common scenario: one dip in the Mondrian pool and our mascara (despite the “waterproof” label) has us looking like Tammy Faye Bakker after a run-in with Hurricane Floyd.

The ultimate challengeFive human guinea pigs from beautyscene’s extensive research department put some 15 waterproof mascaras to what they determined was the ultimate test: to slice their way through a bag of yellow onions. On the whole, most waterproof mascaras might hold up in a dense fog, but are simply no match for your average Barbara Walter’s interview/Gilroy Garlic festival/shotgun wedding. Here are the winners: Continue reading »

It does not make sense to spend a lot of money on mascara because you should replace it every three months. Mascara is also a great item to go cheap on because there is little difference in quality between so many of them. My $1 Wet ‘n’ Wild mascara goes on the same or better than all the department store mascaras I have tested. I just have not found department store mascaras to be of any higher quality than drugstore formulas. Yes, I understand that for some of you this is your favorite product and you would never change brands. That’s OK. Pick another area to cut costs, but look at these figures first:

A $15 mascara will cost you $60 a year
A $5 mascara will cost you $20 a year
A $3 mascara will cost you $12 a year
A $1 mascara will cost you $4 a year Continue reading »

Party Make Up

For Your Lips
Shape up your lips nicely and precisely, with the help of a lip liner pencil. Now is the time to apply the lip color, with the help of a brush.Blot the lipstick with tissue and then apply once again.

For The Cheeks
As against the powder-based blush of the summers, it is best to opt for a cream-based blush for the cheeks in shades of peach and pink in this season on order to give them a natural glow. Also, a dewy look for the lips is the thing to go for this season. The lips should be given a subtle look in shades of pale pink. Make sure that you use a lip liner and blot the lips with a balm to give them the moist look.

For the eyes
For the eyes, use a concealer if you’ve got dark circles – remember to pat the concealer and not rub it in. Use transfusion powder and eye shadow to highlight the eyes. A dash of mascara can work wonders in lengthening your lashes.

Younger skin can get away with bright, garish makeup, but on older skin these colors tend to look “clownish”.. plus, they can emphasize fine lines and wrinkles!

Skin starts to change when you’re in your twenties. By the time you reach thirty, it starts losing color.

The worst thing you can do is to try adding color to your face by using foundation… this will give you a terrible “mask-like” effect and leave you with tidemarks on your jawline. Continue reading »

Kissed by the sun
Summer is here, and I hope everyone is remembering their sunblock! Bronzer is a great temporary way to fake a tan, but sometimes it can look unnatural and somewhat flat, especially on those of us with lighter skin. I found that adding a touch of pink blush on my cheeks after applying my bronzer makes my tan look more natural, becuase in the real sun, your skin doesn\’t turn just bronze, but a

Adjusting Your Make-up For Unflattering Clothing Colors ~ Wedding Day Make-up
~ The Question of Balance ~

Good make-up application and choosing appropriate colors for your skin tone are what make your face look great, not how much you spend. Lots of good books have been written on make-up application. I particularly like Bobbi Brown Beauty by Bobbi Brown and Annemarie Iverson, and The Beauty Bible by Paula Begoun. You can find a lot of books on make-up application at the library. Even the books that are 10 or 15 years old can still have much you can learn from. Sometimes you can even find the newest books. The only problem with these types of books is that authors often say “this is the best way” to do something, and then you try it, and it may not work well for you. There are many good opinions and techniques out there, but ultimately very few true “rules.” Sometimes what works well for a professional in her work is too technical, time consuming, or impractical for daily use by the rest of us. Women also have different skill levels, different skin types, different amounts of lines on our faces, live in different climates, and use different types of products. Continue reading »

Want to know how to achieve that smoky eye look you see models wearing? Look no further!

  1. Sweep an off-white or creamy base color lightly over the entire eye lid.
  2. Apply a very pale grey shade of eye shadow from lash line to the crease.
  3. Apply another grey — one that is a few shades darker and has a shimmer — in the crease area.
  4. Blend the two shades of grey with a brush.
  5. Lightly brush the grey eyeshadow from step #3 under the eyes. Soften it by gently blending with a brush
  6. Apply two coats of black mascara.

Know when it's time to toss makeup.Unlike Duracell batteries, most makeup does not keep going and going. Not only will old makeup not perform well if it is used past its prime, it can also contribute to a nasty infection.
To ensure optimum results, here is a list of guidelines for when to unload various cosmetic items:

You’ve picked an excellent time to think about changing the contents of your makeup bag. One thing you should probably get rid of is that old mascara. Your eyelashes are your first natural defense against dirt, bacteria and other yucky stuff that can get into your eye area. Replace it every three months, even if it isn’t used up. TO AVOID A HEAVY BASE FOUNDATION
Does your base make-up look heavy? To get a base/foundation that looks natural, choose a colour closest to your natural skin tone. Dilute the foundation with water and apply on face. Alternatively, blend the foundation on your face with a damp sponge. Finish by using a powder that is a shade lighter than the foundation.
Oil-Free Foundations
If you live in a humid city, read this very carefully. A humid climate means that you perspire a lot. And when you perspire a lot, your foundation tends to show. You could of course keep blotting off the sweat. But by the end of the day, your foundation will look heavy and layered. Say hello then to oil-free foundations. They’re light and perfect for humid climates. And if you don’t believe us, listen to John Maxwell, the maker of the immensely popular Makeup Magic video: “I work with thousands of women…each year, and they agree it makes all the difference.” Continue reading »
