facial and more

According to beauty expert,  it takes more than makeup to get great looking skin. Regular facials and good at-home skin care are the right place to start.facial and more

With clients like Salma Hayek (“wonderful skin”), Heidi Klum (“perfect skin”), Rebecca Romjin-Stamos (“incredibly healthy skin”), and Isabella Rossellini (“great skin”), celebrity makeup
artist Charlie Green sees her share of amazing complexions. “Evenness is big,” says Green. “Even skin is beautiful skin. If you have a dry patch or an oily t-zone, makeup will emphasize—not disguise—those areas. Regular facials even out the skin tone, and make makeup sit better.

“Most of my clients are in the public eye. They wear lots of makeup and are under hot lights all day—the combination is very detrimental to the skin. I can definitely tell who is getting facials, taking care of their skin. Makeup goes on better on healthy skin (clean, exfoliated, moisturized). Continue reading »

207935_f260

If you invest tons of time and money in skin care – then you should also give extra care for your lips. Just as you would apply SPF on the rest of your body, put207935_f260 on some protective and healing balms on your lips. (You can still use your non-SPF signature lipstick; just always start with a base of SPF lip balm.)

Our lips are the most sensitive part of our skin. Notice how it dries, chaps, and bleeds due to cold weather or too much heat before anything else? Get yourself a bottle of Vitamin E oil or lip balm with Vitamin E to heal the lips aside from regular windburn or sunburn prevention. It will heal and also protect your lips from more serious conditions such as cancer. Plus, it will also prevent the signs of lip aging.

If your lips feel flaky, then it’s probably a reminder to exfoliate them. Much like the need to scrub out dead skin while you shower. Just give your lips a good scrubbing (with your toothbrush) after brushing. (If you can brush your gums, why not your lips?) Be sure to follow it with moisturizing. Aside from Vitamin E, you can also use glycerin-based balms, which will help lips retain moisture and stay hydrated. Continue reading »

American-fashion

Every woman wants to look beautiful, feel healthy, and smell as if she’s danced upon lillies. So what’s wrong with that, you ask? Nothing, if you’re the owner of a cosmetic line or fashion apparel store. A stroll through any cosmetic or retail drug outlet will prove one indisputable fact: the beauty and fashion industries are billion dollar entities and growing. Women are bombarded with product choices: matte lipstick or glossy? fade cream or night gel? soap or shower cream? How can we get the look we want without collecting a medicine cabinet full of products that don’t live up to the hype? Is it possible to get the Nordstrom’s style at the K-Mart price?

“When I looked over my spending one month, I couldn’t believe I’d spent over $75 on just hair care and skin products,” says Kim, a Registered Nurse in Maryland. She continues, “and to be honest, most of the time I wind up with two or three of the same [kind of ] product at home and none of them work.” Kim isn’t alone. Too often women depend upon expensive products and services to deliver a look or a feel rather than doing the simple things that can enhance our own inner beauty. When cleaning one afternoon, I noticed that I too had dozens of the same color polishes and lipsticks, not to mention five different skin creams that each promised to “defy” the aging process and “make every blemish disappear.” So as each one found their place in my trash can, I decided to also chuck the idea of spending a fortune for what I could get for free (or close to it). Here are my top ten tips for getting the look without breaking the bank.

HAIR, SKIN and NAILS

1. Keep it simple. Go for low maintenance hairstyles like bobbs, pixie cuts, braided styles or french twists. Why? These styles achieve two great results: first, they usually take less preparation time and two, they require fewer products to maintain. Symmetrical and layered hairstyles can be cumbersome and costly because they usually require holding gels, sprays or other products to add body and lift to the hair. Frequent trips back to the beautician are also needed to maintain the look which only leads to more expense.

2. Stay on schedule. Trimming the hair every five to six weeks will minimize breakage, split ends and frizz and will reduce the number of styling products needed to maintain the style. Continue reading »

Spring_Clean_Dating.preview

Every year on the first day of spring I go out and buy six new bags. Six heavy-duty green garbage bags, that is. Armed and ready for the charity bin, the annual girlfriend give-away, the consignment shop and the trash, I attack the bathroom, the make-up bag, the shoe collection and the wardrobe like a combine harvester. Out with weird fluffy tangerine cashmere sweater! Out with mismatched glove, ugly raincoat and gooey coral lipgloss. Out, out, out with knots of black nylon hose and safe little evening dress with the slightly cocktail-stained décolletage bought at Loehmann’s in 1997.

Don’t think me ruthless. Gertrude Lawrence, the crisply chic cabaret star of the 1920s, ditched both her stage and personal wardrobe for fresh duds from Paris every six weeks. Apparently her tennis whites and feather boas simply lost their bloom. Well, knowing what a Banana Republic silk tank looks like after 18 months of machine washing you can well relate to the desire to start afresh at least once a year. Spring cleaning is not just about retiring exhausted clothes and half gobbled lipsticks, it’s about renewal. Everyone wants to feel slightly starched when the first daffodils pop up. Even if you normally wear little or no makeup, you should wear some on your wedding day. If you do not, you may end up looking “washed out” in your photographs.
When you pick out your wedding day makeup, wear a white shirt.
For the most part, keep makeup very matte looking. The strong lights tend to reflect off your face if you use makeup with a lot of shimmer in it; however, you can use a bit of gloss on your lips.
Since the camera captures the slightest shine, you should have a powder compact handy for quick touch-ups during the photography session.
Make sure your blush, lip liner and lipstick are all in the same color family.
To make lips seem full and luscious for the entire night, first draw a well-defined lip with your sharpened lip liner. Then fill in your entire lips with the liner. Follow with lipstick using a lip brush. Finish lips by blotting them lightly with loose powder; then apply another coat of lipstick.
Stay away from very brown or pale lipsticks – they look washed out on photographs.
Use an eyelash curler before applying mascara to make your lashes look longer and your eyes look bigger
Bring out your eyelashes with an extra coat of mascara, making sure that every lash is separated. Of course you’ll want to wear waterproof mascara!
Finish your look with loose powder; it sets everything.
Don’t forget about your hands! Everyone will want to gaze at your beautiful ring at the reception, so make sure your nails look great!
To keep yourself looking your best on the wedding day, give your head bridesmaid a small bag to carry with your essentials. Include lipstick, blush, a powder compact, a sample vial of your perfume, an extra pair of pantyhose, a nail file and any other items you might need.

How-to-Wear-Red-Lipstick

Lip Pencil

Lip liner pencil can be a very inexpensive and versatile item. In addition to lining the lips, you can also wear them alone as a long-lasting lipcolor. I love to wear my Winks Brandy pencil like this. This is a great way to use a lip pencil that doesn’t go with any of your lipsticks. You can wear the pencil alone, or under or over lip gloss, Vaseline or lip balm. Lip balm is longer lasting, but more matte. Wearing pencil over gloss will create a sheer look. A touch of transparent frosted lipstick (try Wet ‘n’ Wild #550A or #555A), or a light colored frosted lipstick over pencil can also add moisture. Continue reading »

Get away from the crowds and those restaurant specials and prepare you and your mate for a wonderful romantic experience without leaving home.

Prepare yourself to be touched. Smooth orchid oil or other body lotion scented with his favorite perfume all over your body, from head to toe. Spray a matching fragrance from the bottom, up so the scent will last longer.

After applying your regular foundation and blush, use a loose, shimmering powder or stick. Try “Sexpot” Luminizer all over your face and cleavage. It will give you a radiant glow! Continue reading »

The trend in make up for Spring/Summer may have a few of us wondering how on earth we’re going to wear  these lime green and mango hued eye shadows, coral lipsticks, opaque lip glosses, and pastel yellows to boot. Is there an alien invasion or something coming our way?

I’ve heard the gasps lately, of women walking by make up counters, browsing through, quizzically trying to figure out how a pot of fluorescent green lime dust came about. Who came up with these colors, anyway? I can’t answer that, my fellow make up junkies, but what I can do is put forth a makeover using some of these scary hues, give you a bit of advice on how to apply some of the shades, and not make them look so untouchable after all.

This is a fun makeup look, and yet holds a classic touch too. The class comes from the technique, and the trend from the colors. Combining the two together, makes it a little less of a shock for some. However, this look is still a bit daring, and can be minimized, or heck go all out and get Mork to take ya out dancing.

Face:
Apply a shimmering face lotion under foundation, or blend with foundation for a glowing and radiant base.
Elizabeth Arden Shimmering Face Lotion
Estee Lauder Body Glow (sheer)
BeneFit High Beam
Nars Body Glow for darker complexions
Before applying loose powder, use a clean powder puff to pat face gently, or use a one ply face tissue. Dust translucent powder with a powder brush lightly over face to set. For added shimmer use a shimmering loose powder on cheekbones, brow bone, and temples.  Continue reading »

What’s your fancy? Shimmery, Glossy, Natural, Bold, and/or Bright? The choice is yours, Millennium Diva. Almost anything goes in the lip department in 2000. The key is to keep it hip and happening. If it looks good, baby IT certainly is!
What’s Up with Oranges and Peaches?
Orange, Corals, and Peaches are hitting the lippy world in a big way. Many of us wouldn’t have dared to wear an orange or even a coral lipstick less than a year ago, but oh my how things have changed.  What makes today’s orange, peach, and coral lipsticks so different? Keeping them sheer with slight shimmer is a go, a full on glossy peachy pout will have them going ga-ga, or going for a bold full on orange juice pout can make many heads turn. Continue reading »

Put extra pucker in your pout with this season’s purple, berry and metallic lipsticks.
This season, purple reigns supreme and lips are no exception to the rule. Brilliant violet, sumptuous burgundy and plum, and burnished red are all hot shades for lips this fall, but the key to success lies in proper application. Continue reading »

You’ve picked an excellent time to think about changing the contents of your makeup bag. One thing you should probably get rid of is that old mascara. Your eyelashes are your first natural defense against dirt, bacteria and other yucky stuff that can get into your eye area. Replace it every three months, even if it isn’t used up.
