Georgette Klinger facial

Astrid Bedrossian, director of training at the Georgette Klinger Salon, has been performing facials for nearly 30 years. First trained in Bulgaria, Bedrossian’s Georgette Klinger facialmethods are top-notch. “My Eastern European training was very medically-oriented,” says Bedrossian. “It’s what makes Georgette Klinger’s facials
unique and effective in maintaining younger-looking, healthier skin.”

“A proper facial begins with a thorough examination of the skin to determine your skin type and the right course of action. This step is extremely important, because many people don’t know what kind of skin they have, or how to care for it at home. There is no set pattern for a facial—I adapt each step to fit an individual’s skin care needs.
“Similarly, your skin type determines the frequency of your facials. Oily skin should first be treated once a week, for four consecutive weeks, because all of the impurities simply can’t be removed in one or two treatments. Afterwards, one facial per month is adequate for maintenance. Dry skin requires two facials within a week to ten days to ensure good hydration—when you’re just getting started, one facial won’t give your skin a month’s worth of moisture. Again, monthly maintenance is sufficient afterwards. Continue reading »

No one is safe. Adults have them. So do eight-year-old children. Even the most sleep obsessed, can’t-function-without-a-solid-eight-hours kind of person isn’t eye concealerimmune. The problem is twofold: darkness and puffiness are inherently two different issues, requiring very different treatments. And getting enough rest isn’t one of them.

“Under-eye inflammation is much easier to treat than dark circles,” says New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Sherrell Aston, whose jam-packed surgery schedule keeps him in the operating room a good 10 hours each day. “Remove the fat pads in the eyelids, and the puffiness is gone. Darkness requires more persistence, and you always run the risk of removing too much pigment. Once it’s gone, it can’t be put back.”

Dr. Fredric Brandt, a dermatologist with practices in New York and Miami, uses a number of treatments—bleaching creams, lasers, chemical peels—to treat dark circles. “I like bleaching creams,” he says. “They’re great for lightening brown spots under the eyes caused by the sun, and unlike laser lightening treatments and peels, require no recovery time.”

All dark circles, however, aren’t created equal. Those with a bluish hue are a vascular problem—the blood vessels under the eyes are more dilated, more visible—and do not respond to pigment lightening procedures. The only solution is eyelid surgery or collagen injections.

Covering up circles is also an option, but too much concealer can accentuate dry skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. “Concealer is the quickest way to make a woman look prettier: awake, young, and alive,” says Valerie Sarnelle, the founder of Valerie Beverly Hills. Continue reading »

face

When winter rolls around and the temperature drops, everyone winterizes their wardrobes, homes and even their makeup. But it seems people often neglect their most important shield from the icy months of winter – their skin! Skin is a natural barrier from harmful agents in the air and it should be treated with the care it deserves. The combination of exposure to cold, windy air outdoors and the dry heat indoors can leave skin looking scaly and blotchy. However, tweaking your daily skin care rules with a few simple steps can prepare your skin for the upcoming winter weather.

Wash Your Face With Lukewarm Water: Cold winter nights can make hot bubble bath sound very appealing, but you should avoid soaking very long in water that’s steaming hot. Water can wreak havoc on your skin by stripping it of its natural oils. The hotter the water, the more the skin loses moisture, thus leaving skin flaky and easily cracked. Use lukewarm or cool water when washing your face and showering, and avoid extreme hot or cold. Also, keep showers at a maximum of 10 minutes, and then pat yourself dry with a towel rather than rubbing, as it will leave some water on your skin for added hydration. Continue reading »

moisturize-feet_300

So it’s like this:  You’re ready to knock ’em dead out on the town, making those final touch-ups in front of a full-length mirror.  You’ve pampered yourself in a hot bath, complete with moisturising body wash and oh-so-gentle exfoliation.  You’ve slathered your gorgeous bod with a rich cream, scented to match your perfume.  You expertly-applied makeup and glistening locks are, in a word, flawless, and  your dress fits like it was made for you.

Enter Mr Wonderful.  And he’s even on time.  When he tells you how wonderful you look, you blush on cue and cast your eyes downward in a lame attempt at humility.  Then suddenly, you see them.  Two of your very best friends, looking up at you sadly, pathetically really, as if to say, “What about us?”

No, your roommates are not huddled on the floor feeling lonely and dateless…I’m talking about your feet.  You’ve taken time to specially treat every part of your body except the two most important!  You’re wearing strappy sandals, and that’s great (we all feel the same way about gorgeous shoes, after all) But what are they revealing?  That big toe you stubbed a week ago at the pool? The remnants of your winter-dry skin?  The pedicure you got how many months ago?? Girl, you are not fit to wear such fab footwear if you’re failing your feet. On whose tootsies are you planning to dance the night away, anyway?  Let’s rewind, shall we? Continue reading »

Chamomile Home Spa

Insomnia? Suffering from PMS? How about a relaxing Chamomile Spa in the comfort of your own home?

What you need

  • Chamomile essential oil
  • Chamomile tea (tea bags or dried flowers)
  • Chamomile lotion

Before you start

Chamomile is considered to be anti-allergenic. But it has a sensitizing effect on some people. To be safe, do a patch test 2 days before the spa. If there is no irritation, do another patch test 24 hours before the spa, if there is no irritation, then proceed with care. If at any time, your skin is irritated, stop immediately. Then rinse with plenty of water.

Caution:
Pregnant women should avoid using chamomile essential oil and should not take too much chamomile tea. Chamomile is an emmenagogue. It encourages bleeding.

The spa

Set a pot of water to boil. When it boils, remove from heat and put 1  teaspoon of chamomile tea (or 1 chamomile tea bag) in it to infuse.

Remove all your makeup with milk. Rinse off with lots of water. Mix a little almond flour and honey and use that as a scrub on you face. Rinse off with a lot more water.

What are they? Wrinkles are caused by a loss of collagen and elastin — the tissues in the skin that make it firm and elastic — as we age. The degree of wrinkling depends on your genetic makeup, but smoking, dry skin and sun exposure (especially sunburns) make it worse. Dynamic motion — making facial expressions — also causes permanent creases over time.

Treatment

Tretinoin (Retin-A ), other retinoids.

Laser resurfacing. This process burns away the outer layer of skin, bringing a less wrinkled layer to the surface.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). These slough off dead skin cells and stimulate collagen production, making cells look plumper.

Collagen injections.

Chemical peels.

Botox injections.

Fat transfer. Fat is taken out of the buttocks and injected into the creases in the face.
