skin looks fresher

Without some kind of exfoliant, dead skin cells build up on the skin, making it look dull, or even dry, and clogging pores. Over time, letting dead skin cells buildskin looks fresher up can even contribute to pre-cancerous conditions. Regularly exfoliated skin looks fresher, healthier, and often clearer, with fewer wrinkles.

What to exfoliate with depends on your skin, says Polis. “What type of products you use to exfoliate really depends on the symptoms you’re trying to treat. And the more skin you exfoliate, the better the long term results—but the greater the side effects (redness, peeling and sometimes swelling).”

There are two basic kinds of exfoliants, physical and chemical. “Physical exfoliaters include scrubs, loofahs, and microdermabrasion, all of which use particles to strip away dead skin cells,” says Polis. “Chemical exfoliaters include alpha hydroxy acids, tretinoin, and peels use acid to break down the cement that holds skin cells together, causing exfoliation.”

Physical and chemical exfoliaters both remove the layers of dead skin cells, but the differences are in the side effects—and end results. “Dead skin cells tend to build up in uneven layers; when light hits the skin, it refracts unevenly, making the skin look dull. Physical exfoliators like scrubs are good to use once a week but can irritate skin as they literally rip off the dead skin cells, aggravating acne or irritating sensitive skin,” says Polis. First, take heart — I have never heard someone described with “Ugh, can you believe the size of her pores?” But know that you are not alone. Large pores are a concern for many women. Although you cannot change your pore size, you can minimize or “tighten” the skin, making pores appear smaller.

Because pores often appear larger when oil and dirt get trapped in them, the first step is to keep the area clean. Daily cleansing and toning are a must. A clay mask once a week will also help to deeply cleanse and tighten the skin (use the time to “think” your pores smaller)!

The good news is skin-care companies are getting the message. Neutrogena has a Pore Refining Line with alpha hydroxy acids and Retinol to even and smooth the skin. Particularly exciting is their Pore Refining Mattifier, which is used in place of your foundation or under it. The Mattifier utilizes silicone to absorb oil and control shine and will act as a foundation primer — filling in uneven skin. Continue reading »

  • To rub off dead skin cells, you should use a gritty scrub on freshly cleansed, wet skin. Choose one designed for facial skin; it should feel soft and not too gritty, with minute grains, when you rub it between your fingers. Avoid coarsely ground fruit-pit scrubs; they’re uneven and sharp and can cut your skin. You can’t go wrong with scrubs that contain tiny polyethylene beads, which have no rough edges. Oatmeal scrubs are also gentle. To apply, use your fingertips (not a washcloth) to gently roll the scrub over your skin for 15 to 30 seconds.

  • If your moisturizer stings after your scrub, you’ve overdone it; lay off for at least a week. Continue reading »

They call it the mini-peel, and it’s luring thousands of women to dermatologists’ offices and skincare salons with promises of younger-looking skin at affordable prices. This “lite” version of a chemical facial peel uses alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which remove dead surface cells to leave skin visibly smoother. Unlike deep chemical peels, which use stronger acids that penetrate far deeper into skin, mini-peels generally cause no scabbing, oozing, or pain and require no recuperation period. Women can, and do get peeled on their lunch hour and go right back to work. But now that some hair salons are offering “buy five, get one free” mini-peel deals, questions are being raised: Are these peels safe? And do they work? Continue reading »

Application of Skin Care Products
Do not tug or pull your facial skin. It is delicate ~ treat it that way!! Gently apply your skin care products with your fingertips in an upward and outward motion. However, on your nose apply products in a downward motion.

Use your ring finger when working with the skin around your eyes. (This finger is the weakest finger on your hand, so you’re forced to be gentle!) Apply your skin care products in a circular motion, starting from your nose out along your eyebrow, and then under your eye toward your nose. Continue reading »

What are they? Wrinkles are caused by a loss of collagen and elastin — the tissues in the skin that make it firm and elastic — as we age. The degree of wrinkling depends on your genetic makeup, but smoking, dry skin and sun exposure (especially sunburns) make it worse. Dynamic motion — making facial expressions — also causes permanent creases over time.

Treatment

Tretinoin (Retin-A ), other retinoids.

Laser resurfacing. This process burns away the outer layer of skin, bringing a less wrinkled layer to the surface.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). These slough off dead skin cells and stimulate collagen production, making cells look plumper.

Collagen injections.

Chemical peels.

Botox injections.

Fat transfer. Fat is taken out of the buttocks and injected into the creases in the face.
