Royal treatment
Up the Robin Leach quotient with several bars of Queen soap and the new champagne lip balm, both from Blue Q: The triple-milled soap smells deliciously of gardenias without being too perfume-y, lathers for days, and leaves even the softest skin begging for more; the purplish-pink lip balm has a slightly fizzy aura that is indeed champagne-like, and also smells faintly of strawberry, with SPF 18. Throw in a few royal subjects, and you’re set. Continue reading »

Evening chicWhat to wear with the acres of gold lame and blindingly expensive jewelry at night this summer? Plenty. Jacqui Stafford glams up as the sun goes down.

From Gucci’s sparkling jersey dresses, bright-pink hosiery, and stone-encrusted sandals to Anna Molinari’s fuschia sequined pant and Ungaro’s beaded crystal silk top, the new maximalist dressing is at its over-the-top best for evening. The makeup to match is all about a dewy face, a smoky eye, and a glossy lip.

“Evening makeup is very indulgent right now, and really complements the new upscale dressing. It’s an extremely glamorous look,” says Curtis Phelps, national director of makeup for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics Continue reading »

Beauty Secrets geisha or maiko

White face, eyebrows and eyes covered with black and dark red paint, crimson lips. All this is typical makeup – the most recognizable element of a maiko, orBeauty Secrets geisha or maiko geisha. This was not always the case. Many people believe that a person has become a geisha whitewash when Japanese travelers returning from Europe, talked about “white beautiful faces.” Others argue that the birthplace of the make-up – China, where such persons were painted royals.

Heian ladies and women closest to the time we used to get white skin means one of two things: rice flour or white lead, which are pre-diluted with water. Eyebrows were removed with forceps, and then in their place drew broad, false and straight eyebrows, located high on the forehead. Painted lips juice safflower.

If we compare the geisha with a courtesan in the era of haya, they distinguish some elements: kimono geisha in discreet colors, and have a courtesan wearing bright clothes . Geisha made themselves simple hairstyle with minimal use of different decorations and applied light makeup . In this instruction, limiting the geisha only worked in their favor. Geisha was the embodiment of iki – quiet chic. At the same time, the courtesans, who used a very bright makeup now claimed as unfashionable. Continue reading »

When easing into the warm days of summer, after months of battling rainy weather, I can’t wait for the warmth. And I’m also finding myself revamping my makeup look to go along with it. Nothing like warm weather to make you want to redo your image.

KEEPING SKIN LOOKING GREAT

After you’ve done the mandatory sunblock, (you do this on a regular basis, right?)

Warm weather does wonders for how you feel, but it can also make your foundation seem to disappear. After a few hours of wear, it can look as if foundation/concealer or powder were never put on at all. Here’s how to adapt. Continue reading »

Makeup in our 20′s was about being noticed — makeup for the rest of us is about being appreciated.

As we age, our skin loses moisture, so choose products that hydrate and provide coverage. L’Oréal’s Hydra Lift and Erno Laszlo’s Multi-Phase Light Diffusing Makeup uses color particles that reflect light away from wrinkles and dark areas, even skin tone, and hydrate the skin.

I love Stila pressed powder — it’s light, provides coverage, and adds a hint of radiance. For cheeks, think light (peaches and pinks) and place high on the cheekbone area.

When my mother and I recently updated her makeup, we chose natural browns for the lips and eyes — which will accent any skin color. She loved it! Continue reading »

The next time you want to temporarily cover your gray roots without going to the salon, try one of the new hair mascaras or color sticks.

Hair mascara is applied with a brush similar to that of a mascara wand….and the new hair color sticks look like crayons.

Both products are quick and easy to use… and both can be purchased over-the-counter in a wide range of colors. Continue reading »

When you’re planning on doing makeup for a beach wedding make sure to know what kind of weather it will be during that special day, whether it will be during the time when the sun is up which can be sunny and humid or at night when it can be cool. If you’ll be doing makeup for a wedding during a sunny day make sure to wear either a light-weight foundation, a tinted moisturizer (See all facial treatments) or even nothing if you already have flawless skin, as the sun will melt a heavy makeup and can be unflattering when taking pictures. If you have blemishes and imperfections, you can apply concealer to those areas and as much as possible always keep the rest of the face light. And don’t forget to apply a face primer (See all foundation primers). If possible, wear makeup that is waterproof! Like waterproof mascara and waterproof eyeliner etc. These last long and won’t smudge easily compared to regular makeup. It is very important to wear waterproof makeup as you will be under the heat of the sun which can make you sweat, melt and ruin your makeup. Plus, you might not know if you will get emotional and cry. You wouldn’t want to end up looking like a raccoon during your wedding day, right? Do some tests with the look prior to the wedding day. Try going out with your makeup on and see if you like how it looks under the sun and make some adjustments if needed.

For those who would want a more neutral look during their wedding day, here’s how:

conceal blemishes & dark circles

If you have flawless skin, you may skip this part. First, apply any face primer (See all foundation primers) all over the face before putting on any light-weight foundation or tinted moisturizer. For me I used Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer (See all foundation primers). This is to make your foundation stay on longer. Next, cover any blemishes or dark circles with a concealer (I used the Youngblood Concealer in Medium) if you have any and keep the rest of your face light and more natural by putting on a light foundation or tinted moisturizer (for this I used the “Get a Tint” Tinted Moisturizer (See all skin protection) by Mark Cosmetics). Next, after you have applied your foundation/tinted moisturizer, set your face by brushing on lightly any translucent powderwith the use of a kabuki brush (See all brushes & applicators) orpowder brush (See all face brushes) to give it a more natural matte finish. How-to-make

Keeping your make-up well organized will save you time, money, and your face will look better. You will have more time to apply your make-up because you won’t have to waste time searching for things. When you can see and find everything, you will get better use out of your make-up and you will not waste money on items you already have. There are many kinds of organizers you can buy for your countertop or for the inside of a drawer. Before you buy one, carefully sort through your make-up and look at what you have, the sizes and shapes of the containers, and how many you have of each to best determine which organizer will best fit your personal collection. An inexpensive option is to use a plastic tray meant to hold silverware. Look for one with squared off compartments. The cheapest option is to create sections in your drawer with small boxes. The boxes that your new checks arrive in work well.

Party Make Up

For Your Lips
Shape up your lips nicely and precisely, with the help of a lip liner pencil. Now is the time to apply the lip color, with the help of a brush.Blot the lipstick with tissue and then apply once again.

For The Cheeks
As against the powder-based blush of the summers, it is best to opt for a cream-based blush for the cheeks in shades of peach and pink in this season on order to give them a natural glow. Also, a dewy look for the lips is the thing to go for this season. The lips should be given a subtle look in shades of pale pink. Make sure that you use a lip liner and blot the lips with a balm to give them the moist look.

For the eyes
For the eyes, use a concealer if you’ve got dark circles – remember to pat the concealer and not rub it in. Use transfusion powder and eye shadow to highlight the eyes. A dash of mascara can work wonders in lengthening your lashes.

According to makeup artist Bobbi Brown, wearing foundation is the surest way to achieve smooth skin — whether or not you were born with it.

Want some more good news? Finding a shade to match your skin tone doesn’t have to be rocket science, even when the makeup counter offers zillions of options. (And since foundation is a makeup kit key item, Brown suggests you don’t scrimp on it: “Even if you make all your other makeup purchases at the drugstore, try to purchase your foundation at a department store cosmetics counter, where you can get professional guidance in choosing the right shade, and you can test a color before buying it.”)

Beautifully shaped brows do more for your face than a facelift. Jacqui Stafford on how to get the ideal shape

Perfect brows make a dramatic change.

Fluttering over the throngs of shoppers on Fifth Avenue, sandwiched between Tiffany’s & Co.and the entrance to Trump Tower, a filmy banner reads (in big block letters) “All Hail the Queen of Brows.” Beneath the sign is a picture of Eliza Petrescu, the Audrey Hepburn-ish perfecter of some of the most beautiful brows in the business: Natasha Richardson, Ingrid Casares, Jennifer Grey, and Yasmeen Ghauri. Petrescu’s appointment book at her new, minimalist chic spa at Manhattan’s Avon Centre Spa, Salon and Store is booked—booked—until 2011, despite the fact that an average appointment takes under ten minutes. “What can I say?” she says, laughing. “Great brows can do so much for your face—it’s worth it.” Continue reading »

Using concealers

Concealers can be used to correct, camouflage and lighten imperfections, blemishes, and under eye circles. Using too light of a concealer will give you raccoon eyes. Applying it to the whole under eye area when you have a puff and a circle will just defeat the purpose. When you begin shopping for a concealer youâll find they come in stick, wand, pot, tube, compact and pencil form. Concealer comes in a variety of skin tone shades and several correction shades such as yellow to correct blue, green to correct redish areas, blemishes and scars and violet for sallow skin tones. Others have light reflecting, or brightening qualities. Continue reading »

Younger skin can get away with bright, garish makeup, but on older skin these colors tend to look “clownish”.. plus, they can emphasize fine lines and wrinkles!

Skin starts to change when you’re in your twenties. By the time you reach thirty, it starts losing color.

The worst thing you can do is to try adding color to your face by using foundation… this will give you a terrible “mask-like” effect and leave you with tidemarks on your jawline. Continue reading »

Make-up-application-tips

First, wash your face. If you have oily skin, use an unscented bar of soap. If you have dry skin, use specially formulated face soap for dry skin, then lather your face with a thick moisturizer to prevent flaking. Next, dry your skin off, and allow it to “settle” for about ten minutes. If you apply the make-up now, it will get pushed out of the pores, creating the “cakey” look.

Now, apply a foundation that matches your skin, using your fingers. Rub the foundation in all over your face as if it was a wonderful cream. Check yourself out in a brightly lit room, make sure there are no streaks. Now, if there are any blemishes on your skin, leave them alone for now.

Next, use a large brush to brush powder evenly over your face. Put some powder on your fingers and rub it into your under-eye area, getting rid of any uneven skin color. Now take a Q-Tip, and put a little bit of foundation on the end of it. If you have any blemishes, lightly (very lightly) dab a tiny amount of foundation onto your blemish. If this conceals it, leave it alone. Otherwise, apply pressure with your finger tip to the foundation in this spot to even it out. Do NOT put powder back on over this spot, it will give it a powdery look. Continue reading »
