Beauty Secrets geisha or maiko

White face, eyebrows and eyes covered with black and dark red paint, crimson lips. All this is typical makeup – the most recognizable element of a maiko, orBeauty Secrets geisha or maiko geisha. This was not always the case. Many people believe that a person has become a geisha whitewash when Japanese travelers returning from Europe, talked about “white beautiful faces.” Others argue that the birthplace of the make-up – China, where such persons were painted royals.

Heian ladies and women closest to the time we used to get white skin means one of two things: rice flour or white lead, which are pre-diluted with water. Eyebrows were removed with forceps, and then in their place drew broad, false and straight eyebrows, located high on the forehead. Painted lips juice safflower.

If we compare the geisha with a courtesan in the era of haya, they distinguish some elements: kimono geisha in discreet colors, and have a courtesan wearing bright clothes . Geisha made themselves simple hairstyle with minimal use of different decorations and applied light makeup . In this instruction, limiting the geisha only worked in their favor. Geisha was the embodiment of iki – quiet chic. At the same time, the courtesans, who used a very bright makeup now claimed as unfashionable. Continue reading »

Every woman wants to look beautiful, feel healthy, and smell as if she’s danced upon lillies. So what’s wrong with that, you ask? Nothing, if you’re the owner of a cosmetic line or fashion apparel store. A stroll through any cosmetic or retail drug outlet will prove one indisputable fact: the beauty and fashion industries are billion dollar entities and growing. Women are bombarded with product choices: matte lipstick or glossy? fade cream or night gel? soap or shower cream? How can we get the look we want without collecting a medicine cabinet full of products that don’t live up to the hype? Is it possible to get the Nordstrom’s style at the K-Mart price?

“When I looked over my spending one month, I couldn’t believe I’d spent over $75 on just hair care and skin products,” says Kim, a Registered Nurse in Maryland. She continues, “and to be honest, most of the time I wind up with two or three of the same [kind of ] product at home and none of them work.” Kim isn’t alone. Too often women depend upon expensive products and services to deliver a look or a feel rather than doing the simple things that can enhance our own inner beauty. When cleaning one afternoon, I noticed that I too had dozens of the same color polishes and lipsticks, not to mention five different skin creams that each promised to “defy” the aging process and “make every blemish disappear.” So as each one found their place in my trash can, I decided to also chuck the idea of spending a fortune for what I could get for free (or close to it). Here are my top ten tips for getting the look without breaking the bank.

HAIR, SKIN and NAILS

1. Keep it simple. Go for low maintenance hairstyles like bobbs, pixie cuts, braided styles or french twists. Why? These styles achieve two great results: first, they usually take less preparation time and two, they require fewer products to maintain. Symmetrical and layered hairstyles can be cumbersome and costly because they usually require holding gels, sprays or other products to add body and lift to the hair. Frequent trips back to the beautician are also needed to maintain the look which only leads to more expense.

2. Stay on schedule. Trimming the hair every five to six weeks will minimize breakage, split ends and frizz and will reduce the number of styling products needed to maintain the style. Continue reading »

  • No matter what your hair type, there’s only one point in the drying process when hair can actually be styled. It’s that critical moment when your hair suddenly goes from damp to dry. Use your fingers and blow-dryer to dry hair until it’s just slightly damp — then pick up your styling brush.
  • If you don’t have time to style your whole head, concentrate on the front and sides of the hairline, which frame your face, and the diamond section on the top of the head, which creates the top layer of the hairstyle.
  • Here’s how you can style your rained-on hair:
    • Use a wide-tooth comb (carefully!) to detangle. Don’t add more styling products — you’ll be redistributing those you used earlier.
    • Blow-dry until hair’s just a little damp. If you’re at work, the hand-dryer in the bathroom makes a passable substitute — or let hair air-dry.
    • Take a few long curler clips (available at most drugstores) and insert them wherever you want to restore wave or shape.
    • Let hair set for a few minutes, remove the clips, and shake.
  • If you’re caught without time to wash your hair, spritz it with hot water and a little light spray gel, then blow-style as usual.

Going to color your hair yourself? You’re better off picking a shade that’s within two to three shades of your natural color. Trying to go too light can leave you with orangy hair.

Once you’ve chosen a shade, you need to pick a tone. Warm tones — such as red, gold, copper, and auburn — generally look good on women with darker, olive skin and dark eyes. Cool tones — those that have a green or violet base to them — are called ash, and they look best on women with light eyes, and pale skin that has a reddish undertone. Continue reading »

Ancient Egypt was one of the earliest societies we know of in which beauty was important. The archaeological evidence is very good here. Paintings, combs, hairpins, wigs, and romantic poetry all reveal the importance of hair for the ancient Egyptians. Hair was considered sacred and like modern people Egyptians also worried about thinning or graying hair and wished to preserve at least the appearance of youth for as long as possible. This was despite it being a common practice in all classes of society for the people to shave their heads. While there were social and religious reasons for this the very hot climate of Egypt had a distinct role. Long and elaborate hairstyles are hot and a paradise for vermin. Egyptian women shaved not only their heads but also other parts of their bodies and wore open pleated skirts to reveal this. Continue reading »

Two books, one at either end of the decade, stand out as cultural signposts to the spirit of the 1970s.

In 1970 Charles Reich, a Yale University Law Professor, published The Greening of America: How the Youth Revolution is Trying to Make America Livable. This book, following on the idealism of the 1960s, heralded a new ‘consciousness’ in which the young and the youth revolution of the latter 1960′s were the vanguard which would lead to the radical transformation of consumerist technological society into an Eden of social justice and respect for the environment. This is a condition which involves pulling out body hairs to the point where there is significant hair loss. Hair from any part of the body may be targeted, including the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, pubic and perirectal areas. People with this condition usually notice that they feel either tension before the hair-pulling, or that they feel tension when they try not to give in to the impulse. Usually trichotillomaniacs feel significant distress about their conditions.

People have been known to have removed all the hairs from their heads. It is thought that as many males as females have the condition in childhood. Hair-pulling often peaks in the 5-8 year old population and then again at 13. Adults who have the condition report that the onset was in childhood and most adults with the condition are apparently women. Continue reading »

Oval Face

Round faces . Round faces should avoid chin length hair with a rounded line that mirrors your round face. Center parts tend to stress roundness, so stay away from them if possible. Also avoid hair styles with short-short crops, or straight “chopped” bangs. Fullness at side of ears also accentuates the round face shape.

Long face shape. The perfect style for someone with a long face shape will add width to the face. Try brow-skimming bangs, and short (chin-length) bobs. Have your hairstylist cut the back a little shorter to add some flair. Curls and waves also work great because they add width to the face.  Avoid hair styles that are too long. These will bring down the face. Don’t go longer than the collar-bone, and avoid a super short cut as well.

Oval Face Shape. The oval face is 1.5 times longer that it is wide and its forehead is slightly wider than the jaw. Considered the most ideal and versatile facial shape by hair experts, many haircuts and styles suit an oval face. However, the best styles to go for are the ones that have layers at the height of you best features such as cheekbones, lips or chin.

Diamond Face Shape. If you have a diamond-shaped face you’ll want to experiment with a variety of hair styles. Almost everything works with your face (as long as you are a true diamond face shape . . . the most misread of the face shapes). You can wear shorter hair styles. However, if you are a dramatic diamond, you need to leave weight in the back nape area like someone with a heart face shape.
