Dandruff (pityriasis capitis) is believed to affect at least 50% of the US population. While it may be a very common affliction, that doesn’t make it any less embarrassing or frustrating when we suffer from it.

The anti-dandruff shampoo market is huge, but I still come across many people who ask me how to get rid of dandruff, particularly through natural methods and making their own home remedies.

In this article I’d like to show you how to get rid of dandruff using a couple of simple natural home remedies that you can make within 10 minutes. So if you’re tired of the toxic chemicals that most big companies are putting in to their products and want to try using some of nature’s own medicine then I might have some ideas for you.

First though, a little bit of background…here’s the science bit ;)

Causes of Dandruff

The dandruff itself is usually a result of the excessive growth of yeast organisms such as Malassezia Globbosa and Pityrosporum Ovale. These organisms are normally always present on the skin in small numbers and feed on the natural oil (sebum) secreted by your hair follicles. When they multiply they can irritate the skin and end up causing the visible flaking that we know as dandruff.

Other causes for dandruff are stress-related; the use of harsh shampoos and conditioners that dry out the scalp; or cold, dry weather conditions. Poor diet can also play a part in contributing to your dandruff problem.

How To Get Rid Of Dandruff

Apple Cider Vinegar Dandruff Cure

  • Wash hair with natural pH balanced shampoo

  • Mix apple cider vinegar with warm water (2 parts vinegar to 1 part water). Adding a few drops of natural oils like Lavender or Rosemary will cleanse the scalp further and fragrance your hair

  • Pour or spray mixture onto your scalp, massage in and leave to dry. No need to rinse out

  • For stubborn dandruff, a stronger mixture can be made (try one-to-one ratio of vinegar to water)

  • Lemon juice can also be used instead of apple cider vinegar.

    • Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar will give you the best results.

    Bay Laurel Leaf Anti-Dandruff Tincture

    • Boil two cups of water then remove from heat.

    • Add 1 and a half tablespoons of crushed bay leaves.

    • Allow to steep for about ½ an hour then strain.

    • After washing your hair, massage mixture into scalp and leave for about an hour before rinsing off.
