“Weddings send women into tanning salons,” says Cheryl Stone of California Tan. “When they wear that special dress, they want to look great. They will also, more than likely, be showing more skin.”
Post-ceremony, the couple typically jet off on a honeymoon to somewhere warm, so it’s important to achieve a good base, she adds. While the development of tanning accelerators has facilitated optimal results in a short period of time, there are still considerations.
“Clients should not burn in an attempt to tan quickly,” she says. “There’s nothing worse than a bride with red, peeling skin.”
Shannon Kulikowski of Body Drench echoes these sentiments, adding if you have not planned far enough ahead, a good self-action tanning product is a better alternative for the big day.
“Salon operators should make sure their clients are using products and exposure times appropriate to their skin types,” Kulikowski says. “It’s important to leave enough lead time before the wedding day – and honeymoon – to get a solid base.”
Dr. Michael Caswell, also of Body Drench, is familiar with the many products which enhance tanning results, and points to two key elements.
“For starters, healthy skin tans best,” Caswell explains. “Heat and UV radiation can cause moisture loss, so it is essential to use a product that replaces moisture and maintains the health of the skin. Secondly, a product should include nutrients required for healthy tanning.”
