As we all know, the health and fitness industry has gone through some unanticipated, even remarkable, changes over the past decade and a half. Burn-baby-burn exercise , once touted as the only way to get fit and trim, is out. Enjoying yourself at whatever physical activity you endeavor is in. In fact, while exercise was once thought of as a means for looking better, today most people do it to feel better – mentally, emotionally, physically, even spiritually. To wit: Fifteen years ago, who would have thought that freshwater fishing would be the fifth most-popular physical activity with women in America?
Most significant, however, has been the widespread recognition that dieting for weight loss is ineffective. For most of this century, women have sought slimness through eating less, eating grapefruit, eating foods “combined,”
eating no carbs or eating nothing at all…once believed dieting was at least as important, if not more so, than exercise . Today he espouses physical activity as most important for both weight loss and maintenance.
With dieting now an anachronism, what’s taken its place? Believe it or not, eating. Healthy eating. Fruits-vegetables carbs-proteins-plus-fats kind of eating. Not-denying-yourself eating. This new attitude helps explain the inclusion of, yes, chocolate on the list of foods that women need. Some things, happily, haven’t changed.
So here it is: the best of what we at Shape know, in lists of 15 items a piece.
