This spring give your face a jolt of electricity with technicolor eye shadows.
Move over mod, color is back with a vengeance. Forget those dark, kohl- rimmed eyes, the new face of spring is aglow with vibrant, bold colors.
Faces are dewy and moist-looking this season with a slight glow on cheeks, and a lot of color on the eyes,” says Miriam Azoulay, a Toronto-based makeup artist. “After years of neutrals and earthtones, it’s good to see people finally wearing color again.”
At spring collections, New York designer Todd Oldham, sent models down the runway sporting electric blue and green shades, as did Versace in his Versus collection. Colors were a little more subdued at Donna Karan, with eyes featuring just a smudge of tangerine.
There are a lot of very colorful fashions this season and makeup reflects what’s happening in fashion,” Azoulay says. Once thought to be strictly taboo, this season it’s de riguer for your eyeshadow to match what you are wearing.
Hot shades to stock up on include: lime green, orange and even the once dreaded baby blue. For evening looks, take a walk on the wild side with rich burgundies and royal purples.
Play around with different colored shadows to find what works for you and what you feel most comfortable wearing,” Azoulay explains.
The trick to keeping brilliant shadows from flaking or streaking lies in proper preparation of the eye and in application of the product.
Before applying shadow, prep lids and the under-eye area with a concealer or foundation. Make sure brows are neatly groomed to create a natural-looking frame for the eye.
These days the thicker the eyebrows, the better,” Azoulay says.
Carefully brush on shadow, being sure to dust underneath the eye to remove excess product. Line eyes on both the top and bottom with shadow using an eyeliner brush. Finish with several coats of black or colored mascara.
Blue and green mascara, in particular, look great when paired with matching shadows,” Azoulay explains. “The colors really open up the eyes and bring the whole face to life.”
Shocking colors for the mouth are also hot for spring, but avoid combining strong eyes with strong lips.
Makeup this season is a balancing act,” Azoulay explains. “Strong color on both the eyes and mouth is too much. Emphasize one area of the face and downplay the other.”
Pale, shimmery shades of pink or coral work best with jewel-toned shadows. If your emphasis is lips, slick on one of the new cyber pinks or luminous violet shades.
